Snowflakes! You can catch them on your tongue or use them to make a perfect snowball. But
have you ever thought about taking pictures of them? Ken did. He is a physics professor from
California. Although the weather in California is usually warm and sunny, Ken’s hobby is taking
pictures of snowflakes. He travels to cold areas like Alaska and Canada to find snowstorms and
take pictures of the snowflakes. “They are often beautiful, and every snowfall brings new
surprises,” says Ken.
Ken takes pictures of snowflakes with a high-quality digital camera. He uses a microscope to
make the tiny snowflakes larger. To get the best images, Ken built a special photo-microscope just
for snowflakes. He collects flakes by letting them fall onto a piece of foam board.(泡沫板).
The pictures must be taken outdoors, so Ken wears lots of clothes to stay warm. But his
fingers often get cold, because it’s difficult for him to take pictures of a tiny snowflake with
gloves.
Each snowflake has shapes and patterns that make it as as a person’s fingerprint. The
hobby of snowflake photography is also unique. Next time a snowstorm blows through your town,
take a closer look at the flakes before you gather them into a snowball. See if you can notice their
unique patterns. Millions of snowflakes are waiting for you!
37. Which of the following isn’t used when Ken works with snowflakes?

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence (智力) developed by
our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answers to these questions are yes.
To some extent, our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can
make a genius (天才) out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who
lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in a rich
environment. In this way, the limits of a person’s intelligence are he reaches those limits will depend on his environment.
It is easy to show that intelligence is something that we are born with. The closer the blood
relationship between two people is, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. If we take two
unrelated people at random (任意), it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely
different. If, on the other hand, we take two twins, they will very likely be as intelligent as each
other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence,
and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.
Imagine now that we take two twins and put them in different environments. We might send
one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where work is boring. We would soon
find differences in their intelligence developing, and this shows that environment as well as birth
plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact (接
触) with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.
41. What does the underlined word “fixed” probably mean in Chinese?
A. 稳固
later?
A. He might become a fool. B. He might never reach the limits of his intelligence in his life. C. He might become a genius if he is given special education. D. C. the importance of their work D. the part that birth plays

A. No education can help make a genius. B. Personality, as well as intelligence, is given to people at birth. C. People who have similar intelligence must be relatives. D. The environment influences people in intelligence developing. B. 确定 C. 修理 D. 安排 42. According to the passage, if a child is born with low intelligence, what might happen to him 43.
