As Times Square belongs to New York, People's Square symbolizes Shanghai. People’s Square is a large open area at the center of Shanghai, now it is the political center, cultural center,transportation hub and a recreational and commercial center. HISTORY: This area was part of the racecourse during the concession days..In 1850, the British colonists established Race Club.during the 1930s, this area was known as the “No.1 Racecourse in the Far East”.
In the 1950s, the racecourse was changed. The northern part became People’s Park, and the southern part became People’s Square. In 1990s, People’s Square was turned LAYOUT:People's Square covers . People’s Avenue runs through this area and divides it into two sections.
The north section has three important buildings: Grand Theater to the west, City Hall in the middle, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center to the east.
The south section is a landscaped area with Shanghai Museum and Music Fountain in there. Do you guys know where is the Zero Point of Shanghai? The answer is that Music Fountain,It’s the start point of Shanghai to any other place.
Roles: Let’s talk about its political center. The City Hall, the building in the center of the square, is the symbol of Shanghai’s political life.Every Shanghai citizen knows that building.
Why we call it cultural center? Shanghai Museum, Grand Theater , Shanghai Music Hall, Cultural Street Fuzhou Road,these facilities all all in here.
Mentioning its transportation function,there are 3 metro lines, The two elevated expressways and Dozens of bus routes crossing the PEOPLE’S SQUARE.
Besides,People’s Square serves as an ideal place for citizens and tourists to enjoy leisure life. Especially NANJING Road,The No.1 Shopping Street in China, is just nearby.

People’s Mansion
People’s Mansion is standing in the middle of People’s Square. It is the office of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.
People’s Mansion was built in 1995. It has 75 meters,with 18 floors. building is simple in style,White in color,means the purity and honesty of the Shanghai government. The protruding part of the main building is a rostrum,( under which is the entrance gate). On the exterior of the skirt buildings, on top of more than 20 There are 3 plates hanging on the pillars of the entrance gate.Their name are Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Standing
Committee of Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress, and Shanghai Municipal People’s Government.
People’s Mansion was originally named “City Administration Hall”. In 1997, it was renamed “People’s Mansion” under the proposal of the local citizens.
3 reasons:First, the government is of the people, by the people and for the people. Second, it is located in People’s Square. the avenue is People’s Avenue,the park is People’s Park. Third, the name “People’s Mansion” can remind every officials to keep people in their mind whenever they enter this building.
At the west corner of People’s Square stands another office building named “City Administration Building”, in which there are many departments of the municipal administration.
Shanghai Grand Theatre
Shanghai Grand Theatre is Located in the west of People’s Square, designed by Jean-Marie Charpentier and Associates. The total height of the building is about 40 meters, Its figure is like a giant crystal palace with a white arched roof and glittering glass panels.
The huge roof stretches out to the blue sky, symbolizing a traditional Chinese treasure bowl to hold the kindness and wisdom of the universe. But our Shanghai citizens has different understanding of this roof.
It’s open to public on August 27, 1998, Shanghai Grand Theatre has successfully staged shows and evenings such as operas, musicals, ballets, symphonies, chamber music concerts, spoken drama and Chinese operas.
Entering the theatre, you find a grand lobby. It is about 2,000 square meters. White is its main color, which signifies elegance and purity. A large chandelier,

In this grand building, three different theatres are provided. First, on the first floor is the the drama theatre ,with 700 seats. It is suitable for Chinese operas, chamber music. Then ,we step in the biggest theatre-The lyric theatre,containing 3 floors ,its capacity is 1,800 seats. It is the place for grand shows, including operas, ballet, symphony, and musicals. Quite a number of world-famous shows have been on, including three greatest tenors Pavarotti, Domingo, and Carreras, the musicals Cats, Lion King. Last,we come to the studio theatre,on the fifth floor. It is the smallest, with only 300 seats, suitable for fashion shows and conferences.
Besides, the theatre has other facilities such as a VIP lounge and rehearsal rooms.On the top floor , It has a restaurant for tourists:望星空。

Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center
Located at the northeast corner of People’s Square, this center is the world’s largest showcases of urban development. The building is more than 40 meters high, with 5 floors aboveground and 2 underground. Looked afar, the building resembles a
the city flower — magnolia. Its theme presents the harmonious elements of “City, Mankind, Environment and Development.”
The basement houses the replica of old Shanghai with traditional Chinese traditional Chinese city gate.On top of the building are 4 giant steel caps, resembling buildings and narrow streets.In the lobby of the center stands a large sculpture named “Morning of Shanghai”. In the mezzanine, many old photos tell people the
history of Shanghai. The second floor is a hall for temporary exhibitions.
The highlight is on the third floor, which is an awesome vast scale model of urban Shanghai. The model is over 600 square meters in size, which is the largest of its kind in the world. It is a master plan full of skyscrapers punctuated occasionally by patches of green. The model presents the view of urban Shanghai within the inner ring before 2020. On the fourth floor you are to get a clear idea of the municipal construction priorities such as deep-water harbor, infrastructure projects, environmental protection, and transportation networks. On the fifth floor are a circular temporal exhibit hall, a number of multifunction rooms and a sightseeing lounge.

Music Fountain
Music Fountain lies between People’s Mansion and Shanghai Museum, occupying the central point of the square. Completed in 1994, this fountain is at the center of a 3,000 square meter square terrace, with the circular fountain areacovering 1,000 square meters.
Along the flights of steps leading up to the terrace, you will find six pieces of bas-relief work.
At the four corners of the terrace are four huge “vases”, in such patterns as lotus seats engraved on them and flowers and plants planted on top. They are actually the sound boxes of the fountain. Around the fountain is a ring of 44 stone lamps.They serve as the seats for visitors.
”. The fountain is patterned after the map of Shanghai with a zigzag mark in the middle representing the Huangpu River. The fountain spouts every half an hour.

Shanghai Museum 3+1MIN
Shanghai Museum is frequently referred to as one of the best museums in China. It was established in 1952 and moved to its present site of People's Square in 1996. It has a round top and a square base, which conveys the traditional Chinese concept of “a round heaven and a square earth”. The round top is modeled on a giant ancient Chinese bronze pot called “ding”, which is the most valued artifact of this museum.
The south entrance is flanked by 8 sculptures of traditional Chinese sacred animals, protecting the cultural treasures in the museum.
Inside, its 11 state-of-the-art galleries and three special exhibition halls are arranged on its four floors,
Shanghai Museum is a large museum of ancient Chinese arts. It houses a collection of 130,000 items of precious cultural relics,其中1万是珍品。
On the first floor, you will find the galleries of bronze ware and ancient sculptures. The second floor is devoted to the exhibitions of pottery and porcelain ware.
On the third floor are the galleries of paintings, calligraphy and seals.
On the fourth floor,there are Galleries of jade articles, coins, ancient furniture and handicrafts of the minority nationalities Among them the most significant are the bronze ware, the pottery and porcelain ware and calligraphy and paintings.
1 MIN:The Gallery of Chinese Bronze Ware
The Gallery of Chinese Bronze Ware is located on the first floor. With a display of over 400 pieces of exquisite bronze ware from the 18th to the 3rd centuries B.C. The articles are appreciated for their magnificent modeling, exquisite patterns, graceful inscriptions and superb casting techniques.
The exhibition is composed of three sections: bronze technology in ancient China, casting techniques of Chinese bronzes, and bronze wares of ancient Chinese minorities. The exhibits contain bronze weapons, wares for sacrificial ceremonies, and household wares. Standouts include two wine vessels with animal mask designs.
The most valuable is a typical food vessel on three legs named “Da Ke Ding” of the Western Zhou Dynasty (1100-771 B.C.),Ding is the symbol of the state.
